If your business earns over $30,000 in revenue in any single calendar quarter, or over the last four consecutive quarters, you must register for GST/HST and file a return. Even if there is no tax to remit, filing is required.

If you fail to file your GST/HST return by the due date (monthly, quarterly, or annually), the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will impose penalties and interest on any unpaid amounts, creating unnecessary costs for your business.

Your filing frequency depends on the amount of taxable sales you have:

• $1,500,000 or less Annual filing (quarterly or monthly are optional)

• $1,500,001 – $6,000,000 Quarterly filing (monthly is optional)

• Over $6,000,000 Monthly filing

* To determine which GST/HST rate applies, you must consider the type of goods or services you're selling and their place of supply. Some items, like groceries and agricultural supplies, are zero-rated, meaning no GST/HST is charged. Other items, such as long-term residential rentals, most medical, dental, childcare, and educational services, are exempt from GST/HST.

* For exempt services, input tax credits may still be claimed for GST/HST paid. Certain organizations, like charities or municipalities, may also be exempt from charging GST/HST.
